John Gregory Barnas, a Wallington Firefighter, died on June 21, 2014, he was 23. After a four year battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma and three stem cell transplants, John was finally cancer free. His death is due to complications from pneumonia. John was born in Passaic, NJ on August 15, 1990 to Gregory and Patricia (Serafin) Barnas. He was raised in Wallington, and a 2008 graduate of Wallington High School. John had been the Captain of the Wallington Junior Fire Department 2006-2007 and joined the Wallington Fire Department in 2008 and was a member of Company 202 to present. He was currently serving as an Engineer. He had also been a member of the Wallington Emergency Squad from 2008 to present. John also served on the Waymart and Browndale Fire Departments in Pennsylvania. John was predeceased by his father Gregory Barnas on February 28th of this year. He is survived by his devoted and loving mother Patricia, his loving brother Kevin, his maternal grandparents, Ruth and Lou Serafin, his Uncle Bill and Aunt Clarie Serafin, Uncle Tom Serafin, Aunt Diane and Uncle Rich Weiss, as well as many loving cousins, and countless devoted and dear Friends. John enjoyed hunting deer, four wheeling at the lake house in PA and buffing fires. John was a truly incredible and remarkable young man, inspiring others suffering from serious illness to find the inner strength to fight while never complaining about his own illness. John’s dream was to follow in his father and brother’s footsteps and become a Jersey City Fireman. Visiting will be held 2-4 and 7-9pm Wednesday, June 25th, Warner-Wozniak Funeral Service, 80 Midland Ave, Wallington. Parking at the funeral home will be limited to immediate family. Public parking and a continuous shuttle service will be provided from Farmland Dairy, 520 Main Ave, Wallington, to Warner-Wozniak Funeral Service. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11AM, Thursday, June 26th, at Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 127 Paterson Ave, Wallington. The family of John Barnas extends a sincere thanks to all the HUMC Staff and all the staff at the John Theurer Cancer Center. Their love and compassion to John and his family was truly overwhelming.
