Edwin P Zulkowski, a lifelong resident of Wallington, NJ, entered eternal life on October 25, 2024; he was 98. Edwin is the beloved father of Linda Zulkowski of Fair Lawn, Beverly and her husband Bernie Desbiens, and the grandfather of Emily (Decd.) and Paul (Decd.).
Eddie, as family and friends called him, was a spiritual, upbeat person, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was born at his family’s home to Paul and Catherine Zulkowski, September 11, 1926; one of three children, brother Henry(Decd.) and sister Stella(Decd.). Eddie's parents were the owner/operator of Catherine’s Tavern on Main Avenue in Wallington.
Eddie attended Lodi High School and later the Bloomfield Vocational School in Bloomfield NJ. Eddie worked for Wright Aeronautical Co. in Wood ridge working as an Aircraft mechanic.
At the age of 20, Eddie joined the United States Army, earning the rank of T5. He was the proud recipient of the World War II victory medal and the occupation metal of Japan. After being Honorably discharged from the United States Army, Eddie returned to Wallington starting his own business as a carpenter and builder of quality Homes Helen and Edwin were married for over 25 years, prior to her passing in 1991.
In 1963 the late Reverend John Kotula, came to Eddie with an unusual request. The Pastor of the Transfiguration of our Lord, Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC,) asked Eddie to build a new church, Raising the Bell Tower of the old church. Eddie was perplexed saying “I’m a home builder” Father John said yes, “you are building a home for God.” The construction of the new Transfiguration Church PNCC on Hathaway Street was completed in 1965.
In 1970, Eddie Retired from new home construction entering his 2nd career as a restaurateur with his good friend Michael Niemiec. Eddie and Michael opened the Stone Chimney, now the location of the Wallington Diner.
In 1997 Eddie married Irene Henry (Kaspriskie), they were married for 27 years prior to her passing in 2022.
Eddie was a devoted parishioner, past chairman and active volunteer of the Transfiguration of Our Lord PNCC. Eddie was also the past chairman, treasurer and proud Recipient of the Wallington Lions Club, Melvin Jones award, for 53 years of dedicated service.
